Retail Chain (ongoing)
Contract negotiations for all utilities constantly return improved terms over initial offers from boards. In addition, the monitoring of suppliers invoices are finding an ever increasing number of billing errors and anomalies.
Using our engineering and negotiation skills, we are also leading the contract negotiations supplies to new stores, including connection agreements, meter installations and supply contracts.
Metals Industry
TM has a significant number of staff with practical experience in steel and the metal industry, including aluminum and other non-ferrous products. Our work in the metals sector has been both on performance and fee basis and covered such areas as, furnace controls, utilities, effluent disposal, grinding media, general purchasing and heat recovery. TM have contracts with major companies, both in the UK and overseas.
CHP Systems
TM has achieved significant savings for clients in the chemical industry from changes in the operational parameters of combined heat and power units. Our power plant experience linked with our tariff and contract capability ensures that CHP plants are used to their maximum capabilities. Pre-installation studies can often significantly reduce the costs of CHP units by ensuring that existing plant is optimised and then sizing CHP requirements accordingly.
Food Industry
A site utility audit revealed that water consumption was excessively high, and a detailed inspection of the distribution system and all points of usage were instigated. A significant number of areas where water was being wasted were soon identified and reported. Altogether annual savings of £105,000 were identified representing 15% of total utility costs.
Steel Wire Manufacturer
A utility cost reduction study identified the heating system for the cleaning house tanks as an area where cost savings could be achieved with a short payback. The existing system consisted of a natural gas-fired boiler supplying steam to coils in open tanks. A brief study was undertaken to measure operating efficiency and assess potential for improvement. As a result, a number of projects were presented to the company management and annual savings of £25,000 have been achieved.
Component Manufacturer
TM’s initial utility survey identified a minimum potential saving of £400,000 per annum. A detailed survey identified savings of £850,000 with an overall capital repayment of 2 years, with £100,000 savings identified with a payback of under 1 year. In addition, a comprehensive funding package gave the client a positive cash flow for the project.
Glass Industry
TM’s initial survey identified potential savings of £50,000 pa. A detailed survey revealed savings of £200,000 pa implemented for little or no capital cost by improving the plant operation.
Methane Utilisation
A programme of work and investigation was undertaken in the public and private sector. The work ranged from investigating methane extraction from working coal seams, to the utilisation of coal bed methane. Power generation has generally been the recommended end product, with natural gas being proposed to balance the “run of mine” gas via calorimeters.
Since the early 80’s TM have been involved in utilisation of methane from such diverse sources as: Pig manure, Chicken waste, Landfill sites and Sewerage. Recent work has included a study into the use of combined heat and power in a UK sewerage works.
Tube Manufacturer
The initial performance contract covered all utilities and TM identified and implemented savings in excess of £100,000, with a capital return of under one year. The contract was extended into quality and plant performance, and here again significant savings have been achieved. Improved furnace control systems have resulted in the percentage rejects being reduced dramatically, and improved furnace flexibility.
Food Industry – Milk Processing
Over the past twenty years, TM have undertaken a wide range of projects in the dairy industry. These have ranged from a comprehensive nation-wide utility report for a major UK company, to individual site effluent investigations.
Cement & Aggregates Industry
TM produced a comprehensive guide to the control of energy costs in the quarry and blacktop industry. This was done with the support of the industry trade association BACMI, and had the support of the UK Government. A similar exercise was also undertaken in the Concrete Products sector in conjunction with the Concrete Society.
